9 of the Best Oils for Dry Skin

Even when dealing with dry skin it is important to select oils which are non-comodogenic (don't clog pores).  Each oil is given a comedogenic rating as follows:

Cocoa butter for example is a great moisturiser high in Oleic acid. However, with a comedogenic rating of ~4 many people cannot tolerate it and we would not therefore recommend it as a primary ingredient in a facial skin care product other than on the lips which don't have sweat glands. It is therefore important to select the appropriate oils to suit your skin type based on their fatty acid composition.


Oleic Acid is an omega-9 fatty acid, very hydrating and ideal for drier skin.  Oils higher in Oleic Acid can help with dry and sensitive skin, reducing skin sensitivity.  They work effectively to reverse the inflammatory response in various layers of the skin.

Below are nine of our favourite oils which are high in Oleic Acid with their comedogenic rating in brackets: 


Almond Oil (2)

Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is a great oil to use for dry acne prone skin due to its emollient properties. It’s great for regenerating skin cells because it penetrates damaged cells and softens them allowing for better hydration.


Sweet almond oil is suitable for sensitive skin types that are dry.


Its fatty acid composition is as follows:

  • Oleic Acid = 62% to 86%

  • Linoleic Acid = 20% to 30%

Apricot Kernel Oil (2)

Apricot Kernel Oil

Apricot Kernel Oil is a favourite oil among those with combination to dry skin types.


It is fairly light weight and absorbs into the skin well.


It is anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-oxidant.


Its anti-bacterial properties also make it a valuable ally against acne causing bacteria.


Its fatty acid composition is as follows:

  • Oleic Acid = ~70%

  • Linoleic Acid = ~23%

Avocado Oil (3)

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is suitable for drier acne prone skin types but may still clog pores. However, if your skin tolerates this oil, it is amazing for hydration and skin tone renewal.


Avocado oil is said to diminish pore size and remove impurities from the skin over time.


Since it is a heavier oil, it may be best suited for use at night on the face


It is great for use on drier parts of the body such as hands, elbows and knees.


Its fatty acid composition is as follows:

  • Oleic Acid = ~ 65%

  • Linoleic Acid = ~15%
